CBSE New Scheme of Studies — Classes 8, 9 and 10
What changes from 2026-27: the four compulsory areas of Class 9, the new subjects, Kaushal Bodh/Vikas and IT, the three-language rollout, two-level Maths and Science, CT/AI, the new internal assessment, and the timeline to the 2028 boards.
WHAT HAPPENED, IN ONE SENTENCE
CBSE released a revised curriculum for Classes 9 to 12 in the first week of April 2026 and explained it to school heads in a webinar on 2 April 2026. The reforms begin with Class 9 in the 2026-27 session, and the first board examinations under the new scheme will be the Class 10 boards of 2028.
| Point | Detail |
|---|---|
| Policy basis | NEP 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023 |
| CBSE Chairperson ★ | Lokhande Prashant Sitaram, from 2 June 2026 — he succeeded Rahul Singh. Secretary: Varun Bhardwaj |
| Rollout begins | Class 9, session 2026-27 |
| First board impact | Class 10 board examinations, 2028 |
| No change to | The 2026 and 2027 board examinations — those cohorts continue on the existing structure |
⚠️ The reform is phased, not overnight. A student already in Class 10 is unaffected. Read every question carefully for which class and which session it asks about.
